1. A timeless book?

I'm glad to see Bruce Elmegreen recommends 'You Just Don't Understand: Men and Women in Conversation' by Deborah Tannen. Before we put on the first "Women in Astronomy" meeting at STScI some of us left this book anonymously in the mailboxes of staff members. After 20 years I can now confess to being the pepetrator. At the time there were about 40 tenured or tenure-track men and only two tenure-track women, Meg Urry and Anne Kinney, on the STScI staff. Communication issues are always important in academia, and the default assumption is that men style is correct and womens' style "different."
This book is very good at making people aware of these differences, enhancing successful communication.

At the just-completed AAS meeting in Austin, the CSWA, the CSMA, and the newly-formed AAS Working Group on LGBTIQ Equality (WGLE) cosponsored a special topical session entitled, "Increasing Diversity in Your Department." The session organizer was the CSWA's Hannah Jang-Condell (now at the University of Wyoming). The presentation slides have been posted here:

Nancy Hopkins is the MIT molecular biologist who was instrumental in creating the seminal 1999 report on gender inequality for science faculty at MIT. That report led to enormous progress. There is a brief but good interview with her in Nature here:

Back to top.5. Dr. Mildred Dresselhaus receives Enrico Fermi Award

The Enrico Fermi Award is one of the government's oldest and most prestigious awards for scientific achievement. In its official award citation, the White House said Dresselhaus was selected for the Fermi Award "for leadership in condensed matter physics, in energy and scientific policy, in service to the scientific community, and in mentoring women in the sciences."

NSF Accepting Nominations for the 2012 National Medal of Science through March 2012
The National Medal of Science was established by the 86th Congress in 1959 as a Presidential Award to be given to individuals "deserving of special recognition by reason of their outstanding contributions to knowledge in the physical, biological, mathematical, or engineering sciences." In 1980 Congress expanded this recognition to include the social and behavioral sciences.
